Do My AC Air Ducts Need Cleaning?

Probably not — and that’s not just our opinion. Major studies, including research from the EPA, have consistently found little to no measurable improvement in air quality from routine duct cleaning.

In most cases, dust inside ducts stays put, adhering to the metal or flexible tubing without circulating into your living space. Regular duct cleanings are only justified when there’s a specific issue, such as:

  • Visible mold growth

  • Rodent or insect infestations

  • Heavy debris buildup (like after a renovation if vents weren’t sealed)

Otherwise, cleaning can actually cause more harm than good — dislodging settled dust into the air or even damaging flexible “Slinky-style” ducts with high vacuum pressure.

In short: unless you have a confirmed contamination problem, duct cleaning is rarely worth the cost or risk.
