What Are My Rent Payment Options?

A quick guide to the rent payment methods we accept, our preferred options, and answers to common questions

We know everyone doesn’t fit into a box, so we offer several options for your monthly rent payment. Below, we’ve listed them in order of our recommendation, based on ease of use, fees, and what we’ve seen work best over the years.

1. E-Check (Preferred)

  • Lowest processing fee

  • Pay directly from your bank account using your routing and account number

  • Set up AutoPay or log in monthly to pay manually

  • Funds typically clear in 1–2 business days, depending on your bank

Important Notes:

  • Be sure your bank allows electronic payments.

  • Always confirm funds are available to avoid NSF (returned payment) issues.

  • For roommates: only one person should set up AutoPay to prevent accidental overpayments.

2. Electronic Cash Payslip (ECP)

  • Conveniently pay at Walmart or other participating retailers

  • Great for tenants who prefer to pay with cash

  • To enroll, simply submit a help ticket and we’ll send your personalized payslip

3. Check or Certified Funds (Mail Only)

  • Mail to our corporate office in Wilmington, NC:
    4002 1/2 Oleander Dr. Suite 1A
    Wilmington, NC 28403

  • We do not accept checks at any other office locations

  • Risks: check fraud, lost mail, delayed delivery

4. Credit/Debit Card (Portal)

  • Available through the online portal

  • High processing fees apply (set by AppFolio’s processors, not MoveZen)

    Payment Comparison

    Check/Money Order
Postage cost, risk of delay Instant at register ❌ Not recommended
    Credit/Debit Card
High Fees Instant ❌ Not recommended

    FAQs:

    Can I set up AutoPay?
Yes! AutoPay is a great way to avoid late fees. Just remember: if multiple residents have an active portal, only one person should enable AutoPay if paying in full.

Why was my payment returned (NSF)?
    Common reasons include:

    • Insufficient funds at the time of withdrawal

    • Bank does not allow electronic payments

    • Incorrect account or routing number entered

What does “certified funds only” mean?
This means you must pay via Electronic Cash Payslip (no personal checks or online payment available). Typically, this is required after multiple NSF/returned payments.

Where can I find more help?
The AppFolio Tenant Portal Help Center is a fantastic resource. It covers:

    • Step-by-step guides on making payments

    • Detailed breakdown of payment fees

    • Troubleshooting common issues

    • Mobile app setup and tips
